When you are developing content for your website there are a few key things to remember:
- Use your list of keywords, but don't 'stuff' your articles full of them. Try just selecting your top 20 keywords and focus on using them.
- Use headings, bold and different sized text. Search engines recognise these elements and will place more emphasis on them when people search for terms that use them.
- Make sure your web developer or your chosen website platform uses natural language website links (Joomla has an option to turn this on) i.e. http://www.mycompany.com/ebook rather than http://www.mycompany.com/87675685689/index.html. Search engines actually look at the link and if the keywords are in the link it helps get you found.
- Within each page you will have the following options, which should be filled in to improve your search rankings:
- Page Title – this is the one that appears at the very top of the browser and should be unique & descriptive (but no longer than 64 characters) on every page.
- Meta description – meta simply means "information about your content" and the Meta description field tells the search engine what your content is about. Search engines use this information to display the first few sentences of a website in the search results. Not only is this important for the search engines but people searching for information on the web read this first description to determine if they should click on the site or not.
